What to look for off road

A trail shoe needs grip and a sole that stops sharp stones getting through, while still bending with your foot. Deeper lugs grip in mud; a rock plate or slightly thicker sole helps on stony paths.

  • Lug depth for mud and wet grass.
  • A puncture-resistant sole for stony ground.
  • Waterproof membrane if you walk in wet weather, or quick-drying mesh if you would rather they drain.

Shoes or boots?

Low trail shoes are lighter and drain quicker. Barefoot hiking boots cover the ankle and keep more mud and water out. Both still give your toes room.

Questions people ask

Can you hike in barefoot shoes?

Yes, many people do. Choose a model with a grippy outsole and enough sole thickness for the ground you walk on, and build up your distance.

Are there waterproof barefoot hiking shoes?

Several brands make models with a waterproof membrane. They are warmer and dry more slowly than mesh shoes.
