Wide toe box shoes

Shoes that are widest at the toes, not the ball of the foot, so your toes can lie flat and spread. These are the styles brands sell in a wide or extra wide fit.

Toe box shape matters more than the width number

A shoe can be wide across the ball of the foot and still taper to a point. What you want is room right at the end, where your toes are. Lay your insole on the floor and stand on it: if your toes hang over the edges, the shape is wrong for you.

  • Look for a toe box that is widest at the toes.
  • Check the shape suits yours: some feet have a long big toe, others are squarer.
  • A roomy toe box still needs a heel that holds your foot.

Wide, extra wide and high volume

Width is not the only measure. Volume is how much room there is over the top of your foot, which matters if you have a high instep. My fit quiz matches your foot shape to brands whose lasts suit it.

Questions people ask

What is a wide toe box?

The front of the shoe is shaped like a foot, widest at the toes, so your toes are not squeezed together.

Do barefoot shoes come in extra wide?

Several brands make extra wide models. I mark wide and extra wide fits on listings where the brand says so.

How do I know which brand fits my feet?

Try the fit quiz. It asks about your toe shape, width and volume and points you to brands whose shoes tend to suit that shape.
